Issue Position: Occupy Wall Street

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

I am a strong supporter of the right of individuals to voice their opinions and peacefully assemble to find strength in one another and combine for a louder voice.

I also encourage everyone to be peaceful, orderly, and law abiding. While I strongly disagree with and believe many local ordinances which seek to limit the right of American citizens to meet and protest to be illegal, I believe it is imperative that we work as best as we can to change the laws within the existing framework.

With that said, I understand what it is like in this difficult economy. I have been unemployed in this economy and struggled to make ends meet. I even am in the middle of a foreclosure. While I do not blame anyone for the situation I am in, I have seen firsthand how difficult it has become for a person who does the right thing to deal with financial struggle while those with connections and influence have rigged the system to ensure that they win whether the coin lands on heads or tails.

We must begin the process of restoring basic balance and fairness. We hear the stories of financial companies selling investments and then betting against the same products they sold. We hear the stories of foreclosures being robo-signed and pushed through the system when the banks/lien holders don't have the proper paperwork to enforce the foreclosure but the legal system seems to turn a blind eye.

I understand the frustration. While no one should get a free ride, the deck shouldn't be stacked against the average American. This is the United States of America, the land of opportunity. We must restore the opportunity fairness that has seemingly left this country. The best way to do this is to continue to make your voice heard, but do it with your vote and your voice.

I would encourage every member of Occupy to join Occupy the Ballot Box. Begin registering your friends and like minded individuals to vote. You can register on this site. Work within your groups to start petitions at the local and state level. Institute recall measures so that the elected leaders who ignore our calls for opportunity receive an early wake up call. Not all of the ideas of the Occupy Movement will enjoy majority support, but it is important that your voice is heard.
